Cozy Comforts: Cozy Great Rooms

Published at October 08 2024 by JFord

The last week or so it seems that fall has really hit the mid-south. Last week we were battling temperatures in the high 90’s. This week its only going to get up to the high 80’s right before it plunges again. I’m not a huge fan of colder weather, but I love curling up on the couch and watching tv with my family. (Anyone else obsessing over The Masked Singer?)

Having a comfortable great room is a must for me and my family. We love to gather up and watch tv together. We aren’t that family that just watches tv, it’s full on participation. We talk and discuss and debate over what is happening in the show. That’s our family time. We love it.

Cozy Great Rooms

If your family is anything like ours, you need to have a cozy great room. So, I’ve pulled together some of our best plans that have the coziest great rooms. Have a look!

Summer Place (MEN 5200)

This lovely rustic home gives you just over 2,600 square feet of living space with 4 bedrooms and 3 full baths. It even gives you space for a 1 car garage. This house plan gives you the look and feel of a rustic mountain cabin while maintaining that modern feel you know and love from Nelson Design Group. This two-story home features a master suite on the first level and additional bedrooms on the second level with a balcony that overlooks the great room with its brick work fireplace.

The first thing that you notice about this home is the front porch with its beautiful stonework columns. This gives you that cabin/rustic feel as soon as you approach the home. It also makes me want to kick back and relax with a warm cup of coffee and watch the birds.

As you step into the home from the covered porch, you find yourself in the foyer. This room is open to the second story and gives the look of a large space as soon as you walk into the home. To your right is one of the bedrooms and a hall bathroom. This bedroom features a large double casement window that faces the front of the home.

Moving through the home, you find yourself in the great room. This room is given character with a vaulted ceiling. Like the foyer, this room is also open to the second story. This cozy room also features a large fireplace along the left wall and sliding doors that open to the covered porch on the rear of the home.

To the right of the great room, you will find the kitchen and dining area. The kitchen has a wrapping countertop that creates a reverse “c" shape. This gives you loads of counterspace to take care of all of your prep work. It also allows you to see into the dining room and creates a sort of pass through for everything to be handed over for mealtimes.

Speaking of meals, you are going to love dining in this area. It has high ceilings and large windows that face out onto the covered porch at the rear of the home. It also opens up to the screened porch. That would be perfect for those nights when you want to dine al fresco!

Off of the kitchen is a laundry area that opens up to the garage and to the back stairway to the second story. This lets you collect and distribute the laundry without a break in stride. The rest of the main floor is devoted to the master suite on the other side of the home.

The master bedroom features high ceilings and a large double casement window that faces out to the front of the home. The master bathroom gives you a large shower with a seat, his and hers sinks and a large walk in closet.

The second floor of the home gives you bedrooms 3 and 4. Both of these have large closets and awesome little window nooks that would be perfect for a play or study area. The second floor also gives you a hall bathroom and a balcony that looks down on both the foyer and the great room.

This lovely farmhouse is just over 2,700 square feet of living space with 3 bedrooms and 2 full bathrooms with 1 half baths. It also features a 2-car garage. This home gives you a great modern farmhouse floor plan while still managing to hold onto the farmhouse style. With a wraparound front porch and an open floor plan, this house plan is the best of both worlds.

The first thing that you notice about this home is the wraparound front porch. This is a classic element of the farmhouse style and immediately makes you realize that this is a farmhouse style home. As you step into the home, you find yourself in the foyer.

Now this isn’t a modern or mid-century style foyer, this is a proper foyer. This foyer separates from the rest of the home and gives you a perfect place to get out of the cold and the wet. It features two closets for storage and is perfect for a busy family.

Moving to the left you will find yourself in the cozy great room. This lovely space is dominated by the fireplace on the left wall of the home. This room also features large windows on both of the exterior walls. This gives the home plenty of natural lighting.

As you move into the kitchen, you will notice that there is an entrance to the porch on the left wall of the home. The kitchen is open to the great room and the dining room. This is where the farmhouse differs from a traditional style farmhouse. Traditionally, all of these rooms would be cut off from each other. The more modern concept encourages an open floor plan.

The kitchen features an “L" shaped design. The countertops wrap around the left wall of the kitchen with a center island that mimics the shape. This island gives you bar seating for 6 and a perfect place for prep work. The dining room has an entrance to the uncovered deck on the rear of the home and features a large window that faces in the same direction. The laundry room and half bath are connected to the kitchen and have ample room to handle even the largest of laundry concerns.

The rest of the first floor is taken by the Master Suite. The Master Bedroom features large windows on the two external walls of the plan. This gives you a wonderful view and lets natural light shine in. The Master Bath features both a freestanding tub and a glass shower as well as his and hers sinks. The walk-in closet is connected to the master bedroom and gives you ample storage space.

The second floor gives you bedrooms 2 and 3. Each of these rooms feature a large window overlooking the east side of the home as well as large walk-in closets. These bedrooms share the hall bathroom right beside the stairs.

Hampton Circle (NDG 597)

This traditional farmhouse plan gives you just over 2,600 square feet of living space with 4 bedrooms and 3 full bathrooms. Unlike most traditional farmhouse plans, this one gives you a 2-bay garage to store your mechanical stable. This home features a lovely covered porch on the front of the home as well as the large windows that the farmhouse style is so famous for. It also has a wonderful great room with a fireplace and a large dining room that connects directly to the kitchen.

The first thing that you notice about this home is the curb appeal. This home just makes you want to move in! (Thank you to our homeowners for their lovely photos.) This house plan gives you a love covered front porch and large windows facing the street. It’s almost too picture perfect!

As you enter the home from the covered porch, you find yourself in a hall entryway. This gives you access to the dining room, great room, study/bedroom 2 and the stairs leading to the second story. To you left you will notice the dining room.

This is a formal eating space that is perfect for families to gather around and enjoy a meal or to entertain. This dining room gives you large windows that face the front of the house and let in some amazing natural lighting.

To your right you will find the study/bedroom 2. This space features the same large windows that make the front of the home so beautiful as well as an in-suite bathroom and closet. From the entry way, you can make your way to the great room.

This cozy space is dominated by the large brickwork fireplace on the right wall and the media center right beside it. The vaulted ceiling is open to the second story and gives the room lots of space while maintaining that comforting feeling. The rear wall of this room features large windows and an entrance to the covered grilling porch on the rear of the home.

Moving to your left, you will find the breakfast room. This space opens up to the kitchen and has a row of windows that open up to the rear of the home. This makes a perfect space to either wake up with your cup of coffee or to enjoy a quiet family dinner.

The kitchen features a large wrap around countertop with bar seating for 4. It also has a small centrally located kitchen island that is perfect for prepping for large meals. Speaking of large meals, you need a place to store all of those groceries! This house plan has you covered with a large pantry that gives you plenty of shelving to keep everything together. The kitchen also opens up to the dining room making it easy to move everything back and forth.

Moving further to the left in the home, you will find the laundry room. This is the perfect location for this room because it comes directly from the garage to the kitchen area. This gives you the perfect place to kick off your shoes and get out of your work clothes before moving into the rest of the home. The Laundry room gives you plenty of space to work and features a soaking sink for those hard stains.

The remainder of the first floor contains the master suite. The master bedroom can be accessed either through the great room or through the study/bedroom 2. It features the large windows that are seen from the front of the home.

The master bath gives you both a large whirlpool tub as well as a glass shower. It also features his and her sinks with room for a linen closet and a vanity. The master suite is rounded out by two large walk-in closets.

The second floor gives you bedrooms 2 and 3. Each has their own closet and window seat in the gable windows you see in the front of the house. I love that! I think that is the coolest thing. They each have access to the hall bathroom on this level as well as a computer center. Don’t forget that the second floor is open to the first and features a large balcony that overlooks the great room and entryway.
