New Year - New Home: Great House Plans for Your Build Part 2

Published at January 03 2024 by JFord

Happy New Year! I have a feeling that 2020 is going to be a great year. It’s going to be a year of change, self-reflection and success. Speaking of success, if you want a successful build this year now is THE time to buy your house plans. It can take more than 3 months to move from the planning stage of a build to the actual building stage. This means that if you want to get the build started in early summer, you need to have that plan purchased and ready to go very, very soon.

Here at Nelson Design Group, we know that buying a house plan is stressful. Don’t worry. We have your back. We have over 35 years of experience and know exactly how to help you find that perfect plan. And if you are unsure about what style your perfect plan falls under, check out the rest of this handy little guide that lets you see the different styles of house plans.

European

European style house plans often use brick or stone exteriors and will usually have a steeper pitched roof. The windows will be tall with shutters and the entire home will have decorative details like pediments and keystones. On European style house plans you will often see arched openings and closed floor plans.

Chancellor Manor (MEN 5180)

This gorgeous European style house plan has just under 4,000 square feet of living space. It gives you 3 bedrooms, 3 full baths and 1 half bath and a large 3 car garage. This home plan has it all! In this floor plan you will find the height of luxury with a large open floor plan that gives you plenty of space for entertaining and a formal living room with views on two sides. Don’t overlook the winetasting room right next to the wine cellar! The outside of the home has stunning white brick with dark wood accents to highlight the front door and entrances to the garage.

As you approach the home, the first thing that you notice is the white brick that covers the entirety of the home. The dark wood that accents the garage doors and large entry door makes that white brick pop even more.

As you enter the home, you find yourself in the foyer. On the right side of the foyer you will find the study/office. This space is perfect for a home office or for a quiet place to read on a cold winter night. The office gives you a picture window that faces the front of the home and barn style doors that can give you great privacy.

As you move further into the home from the foyer, you find yourself in an open floor plan that includes the great room, kitchen and dining room. The great room is directly in front of the foyer and is an absolutely massive space.

The great room features exposed timber beams and a large fireplace with built-ins bracketing it on each side. The rear wall of the great room has a large sliding glass door. This would be a perfect place for a custom door from Panda Windows and Doors.

This large sliding glass door leads out to the outdoor living area and grilling porch. This uncovered space gives you plenty of room to entertain and cook out. This space also features room for an outdoor kitchen and a grill with a vent a hood.

The Kitchen is separated from the great room by a kitchen island with a built-in informal dining table. This small dining table gives you seating for 4 that is right against the kitchen island. The island gives you space for both a sink and a dishwasher.

The sink and dishwasher face the great room. Making the island a perfect place to clean up and wash up after a meal and be able to keep an eye on the great room. Adjacent to the kitchen is the dining room. This space has great views with windows on two of the walls.

Behind the kitchen and dining room is a hallway that will give you access to the large master suite and laundry room. The master bedroom features a bank of windows on the rear wall that face the rear of the property.

The master bath has plenty of space and features double vanities, a free-standing tub and a corner glass shower. The walk-in closet has plenty of space for storage and has an entrance to the large laundry room.

The laundry room has plenty of storage space and features a long counter on one wall of the space where you can sort and fold. It also has a sink where you can soak anything that may need extra attention.

On the other side of the home you will find bedrooms 2 and 3. Each of the bedrooms has windows that face the rear and front of the home, respectively, and their own sink and walk-in closet. They share the jack and jill style bathroom between them.

The first floor of the home is rounded out with a flex room that is perfect for use as a winetasting room and a wine cellar. These are right next to each other. The wine cellar is large enough to store a modest collection while the tasting room features a high ceiling and a picture window that faces the front of the home.

The second floor has a large bonus room and space for storage. If you choose to build this portion of the house plan, you will have enough room for a loft style bedroom with space for a king bed, its own private sitting area and in-suite bathroom.

Traditional

The idea of a traditional house plan is not one that is set in stone. Unlike other styles of house plans, this one depends on the region where the home is being built. There are, however, some elements that all traditional style house plans share. These include minimal ornamentation, simple rooflines and evenly spaced windows. The building materials in a traditional home will usually be either wood or brick.

Heritage Manor (NDG 1670)

This traditional house plan gives you just under 2,700 square feet of living space with 3 bedrooms and 4 full baths. This home has tremendous curb appeal with its mix of exterior elements. The exterior of this home has a mixture of stone and board and batten siding with a white covered porch. On the inside of this home, you will find a giant master bedroom and master bath, an open floor plan that includes the great room, kitchen and dining room and a lovely bedroom on the third floor with its own bathroom.

As you approach the home, the first thing that you notice is the mixture of exterior elements that gives this home such a lovely curb appeal. The home has stonework as well as traditional board and batten siding and a lovely covered front porch.

Entering the home from the front porch, you find yourself in the foyer. The foyer is open to the second floor which gives the home depth and character. The foyer has access to the stairwell that goes to the second floor as well as a full bathroom right inside the door.

On the left of the foyer is a flex room. This room can be used as a guest room, an office, another bedroom, a workout space, etc. The sky is the limit here and with the charm of a vaulted ceiling and large picture window facing the front of the home, you really can do no wrong. This flex space also offers you access to that full bathroom and a walk-in closet.

On the right side of the foyer is a guest room/ study. This room features a more private in-suite bathroom and a smaller closet. It also has a large double casement window that looks out over the front of the home and the covered porch.

Moving further into the home, you will find yourself in an open floor plan that includes the great room, kitchen and dining room. The great room is open to the second floor and has a large fireplace along the right wall. The rear wall of the great room is dominated by two French doors that lead out onto the grilling porch on the rear of the home.

The kitchen is separated from the great room by an island that gives you seating for 4. This island is also the perfect place to clean up after a large meal. It features a sink and dishwasher where you can clean up and still keep an eye on the comings and goings in the great room.

The rest of the kitchen gives you plenty of counterspace so that you can prep your meals and has space for a large range. The kitchen also gives you access to a large pantry. When I say large, I mean its big. This pantry is probably my favorite part of this space.

Adjacent to the kitchen is the dining room. The dining room has windows along two of the walls that will give a great view of your property. It also features a charming vaulted ceiling to make entertaining more intimate. The dining room also has a sliding door that opens onto the grilling porch on the rear of the home.

On the other side of the home, you will find the laundry room and kid’s nook. The kid’s nook comes directly from the garage and has both a closet and space for storage bins and hanging storage. This is great for when you want to come in and get those coats and boots off before moving into the rest of the home.

The laundry room is accessed from the kid’s nook. It gives you a corner countertop that is great for sorting and folding. The laundry room also features a large sink for soaking those really bad stains and hanging storage over the washer and dryer.

The remainder of the first floor is occupied by the master suite. The master bedroom gives you high boxed ceilings and a large picture window facing the rear of the home. This room also has a private entrance to the grilling porch. The master bedroom is huge. It’s almost the same size as the great room so you can definitely fit that California King size bed in there.

The master bath gives you a double sink, a free-standing tub and a glass shower with a seat. Don’t forget about the walk-in closet! This large closet gives you plenty of storage space no matter how many pairs of shoes you find on sale.

The second floor features the third bedroom and a bathroom. The stairs open up and lead you past the theater style balcony that overlooks the great room on the first floor. The bedroom on the second floor gives you a double casement window that faces the front of the house and a small closet with its own window. The bath has a double sink and can be accessed from either the bedroom or the hallway.

Rustic

Many rustic house plans will share the same key elements between them. Some of these include timber framing, stacked stone fireplaces, and rough-hewn wood or stone. Rustic style house plans will also usually have the feeling of being on top of a mountain and the design elements reflect that with large open floor plans that feature plenty of windows to let in natural light and enhance the view.

This rustic plan gives you just over 2,100 square feet of living space with 3 bedrooms, 2 full baths and 2 half baths. This house plan gives you plenty of curb appeal with a lovely covered porch that runs nearly the full length of the front of the home and a traditional gabled roof. The inside of the home has a grand open floor plan that incorporates the great room and kitchen. On the rear of the home, you will find a large covered porch and separated outdoor living area. This floor plan is made for the family who loves to entertain and have fun.

As you approach the home, the first thing that you notice is the traditional gable roof line. The covered porch on the front of the home may also catch your eye with its rustic exposed beams. The rest of the exterior of the home is covered in traditional board and batten siding with rustic accents.

As you enter the home through the double doors, you find yourself in the open floor plan that includes the great room and the kitchen. You immediately find yourself in between the two “rooms" in the open floor plan.

To your left you will see the fireplace that dominates the right wall of the great room. This great room also features a vaulted ceiling with exposed timber beams. There are four large double casement windows in this portion of the home. Two face the rear of the home and two face the front of the home. The left side of the great room, like any other classic open floor plan, gives you a perfect place to put in your dining table.

On either side of the fireplace you will find built-in shelving that is perfect for a home entertainment center. The great room also features French doors opening onto the covered porch that runs nearly the length of the rear of the home. This covered porch gives you a perfect place to grill out with a small kitchen area tucked away in the corner.

The porch has steps down that lead to an outdoor living area situated in the rear of the home. This outdoor living area gives you a cozy setting with an outdoor fireplace. Perfect for grilling or entertaining.

The kitchen is separated from the great room by an island that gives you bar seating for 5. The kitchen also includes a large corner pantry and plenty of counter space for prepping meals. The sink is on the rear wall and has a window that faces the rear of the home, making it a bit more enjoyable to be stuck doing the dishes.

Just past the kitchen you will find bedrooms 2 and 3. Each of these bedrooms have a large window that face the rear and front of the home, respectively and access to a linen closet as well as the hall bathroom that features a double vanity.

On the other side of the home, you will find one of the two half baths and a storage closet behind the fireplace in the great room. Past the half bath, you will find the large laundry room. This laundry room is big enough that it has to have its own window!

The rear of the home gives you ample space for the master suite. The master bedroom features a vaulted ceiling that continues the theme of the home from the great room and a large picture window facing the rear of the home. The master bath gives you a large shower and plenty of closet space for even the avid of shoppers.

This plan includes plan for a 2-car garage with a connected shop. This connected shop gives you a small porch area on the outside with plenty of room to work on the inside. The shop features a small sink and a half bath.
